Free icon base: Crazy jump by BronzeHalo Free icon base: Crazy jump by BronzeHalo

Among dozens of ancient half-finished files was this avatar-sized animation.
I thought I might as well quickly fix and finish it... and share it, because why not.
As usual with my free icons, I expect it'll get stolen much more than properly used, but oh well.

Here's a PSD version if you prefer.
Or a PNG of this sheet, if the GIF format is awkward to edit.

I miiiight do custom colourings later? Depends how much I look forward to seeing them eventually stolen all over Howrse. -__-

Animation's mine. MS Paint and Photoshop CS3.
Originally sketched a while ago, no idea when this mini version was started. Only shaded it today.

Is there a certain place in Photoshop I need to be in?
All that comes up is the picture here
BronzeHalo Featured By Owner Jul 22, 2015
Click the link in the description, there's a page which contains the PSD. Click Download there, and it should automatically open itself in Photoshop, with layers and whatnot. :) Or is the issue something else?

How will I make it play?
First time animating, even with a base.. Please don't judge
BronzeHalo Featured By Owner Jul 22, 2015
Depends which version of Photoshop you're using?
If it's CS2 or later, go to Window -> Animation and a little toolbar will pop up. It should have little boxes showing every frame. Click the arrows to make it play through the frames, one by one. The speeds are already there under every frame, no need to change them.

Or if the Animation toolbar shows a timeline thingy first, click the icon in the bottom-right corner, it should say "convert to frame animation".

Different/older versions of Photoshop don't have the built-in Animation stuff, so I can't help you with them. Tutorials might cover it. :)

Using CS6, and I'm not seeing an animation thing in Windows.

One thing, I'm getting all the layers confused, I got the first one, but the rest are getting weird.
I got the first colored horse (Chestnut) colored to my fursona, but the next chestnut isn't lining with the shading/outline
BronzeHalo Featured By Owner Jul 23, 2015
Did some googling, does this help? Find the "timeline panel" somewhere. This is a new thing only in CS6.…
Instead of the Timeline view, though, you need to find the option that changes it to Frame view. I use an old version so IDK where this option is, but it will be there somewhere. ^^'

When you find that window/toolbar with the frames laid out in order, then I can help you figure out how to get it working.

Used this line-art and colored in my gal Bishop! Unfortunately the file size was too large for DeviantART so I only used the first frame as an icon. The credit on is shown when you click on the image, and the credit for my current icon is in my signature! Thank you so much for this beautiful lineart set, you truly have talent. ♥

Are you interested in doing a custom coloring now? I'd love to commission an icon with this base, just for use on dA.

I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong because for whatever reason it keeps telling me it is too large and I'm not figuring out why. It says smaller than 15kb but I didn't do anything to change it, and clearly it works for others... so I'm not sure if you have an idea?
BronzeHalo Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2014
Hmm, have you added a background, lots of colours (ie the full 256 instead of 24), or any extra things in frames? Those can all increase the file size. Also, even if something is 14.99 kb, when it comes to uploading it can have problems - so I try and stay below 14.8 or so.

Depending on what software you use, there might be extra options for exporting as a GIF - I can help you with those, if you use a newish Photoshop version.

Otherwise, without seeing your image, it's hard to guess what the problem might be... if nothing else works, then as a last resort, maybe I could try re-animating and testing it for you, it might work then?
MakiTokito Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I know someone else has a background on theirs, just a slab of color so I wouldn't think of that, but who knows. The only real thing  I did was that the color layers werent lined up with the shading and lines so I moved them down but it didn't change the layers or size or anything. I actually use GIMP 2.6.

Oh and to make it clear incase was misunderstood, the animation itself works just fine it's when I go to add it as my icon and upload it is that it says too large.

I'm using it in my project - credit is given with link back to this page.
It will be subjected to much more intense editing but this is the first sketch if you are curious as to how your bases are used...

hey there I was having trouble with the psd version I just tried out now. your only suppose to color the color layer right? the first frame to the animation was fine and I was able to color fine but the rest of the color layer frames was not working right like I would color them and the layer would be flat, it wouldn't have the shading go with it.
BronzeHalo Featured By Owner Sep 28, 2013
Could be a few things...
Do you have the Animation window/panel up? In versions CS2+, it's Window > Animation. Often people say they're having trouble doing things, but it's just because my PSDs are set up to be edited with that special window, and otherwise only the first frame's-worth of layers will be in the right settings.
If you do have the window up, but something's still not working, send me a screenshot.

Also, yes, only the Colour layers should be edited, and they should all be set to Multiply or something, on top of the Shading layers. If they're looking flat, then either they're still on Normal, or the shading layer isn't showing up under them... maybe check them all again, separately?
